Heighington, Railway Station
Heighington station, formerly Aycliffe Lane station. Photo by Topical Press Agency, London. Text on reverse reads: 'Level crossing where No 1 Locomotion and first Railway Coach "Experiment" were placed on rails previous to going to Shildon for use. Both were conveyed over the high road from Newcastle and made a trial run from Shildon to Darlington (North Road) the night previous to the opening day [1825]. S & D Railway Directors and others travelled with the trial run.'
