Aycliffe, Royal Ordnance Factory, Shifting Houses
The Shifting Houses, entrance to Group One explosive mixing, where explosive magazine clothes were put on before work. Contraband hut in foreground for matches etc. Group One was known as the "Suicide Group", seven persons being killed there. The untransportable Lead Azide was made here, and the equally dangerous fulminate of mercury processed. Cap detonators and tubes (for shells and ammunition) were finished here.
