Elemore Colliery, closure
The last shift emerges from Elemore Colliery, 1 February 1974. The pit was originally sunk to the Hutton seam and worked 26in seams at about 900ft. It closed after 149 years due to difficult and dangerous conditions. Sunderland Echo photograph.
