Penshaw, railway bridge

dre/s/04444.jpg

Penshaw railway bridge on the old A182 between Houghton-le-Spring and Washington, looking west towards Fatfield. The bridge carries the old N.E.R. "Leamside" main Newcastle - York line (now disused) and colliery railways. The locomotive is probably N.C.B. The bus is a 1930's Sunderland District Leyland Tiger travelling to Fatfield. All these buses were withdrawn from service by late 1954. The lorry is a Bedford O Type made between 1946-1951, and this photograph was therefore taken between 1947 and 1954.
